What Is a PSA Population Report? How to Use Pop Reports to Buy Smarter

If you've spent any time in the graded card market, you've heard the term "pop report" thrown around. Understanding how to read and use a PSA (or CGC) population report is one of the most powerful skills a collector or investor can develop — it tells you exactly how scarce a graded card really is.

What Is a Population Report?

A population report (pop report) is a publicly accessible database maintained by grading companies that shows how many copies of a specific card have been graded at each grade level. PSA publishes its pop report at psacard.com/pop, and CGC maintains a similar registry at cgccomics.com.

For every card in their system, you can see:

  • How many copies have been submitted for grading
  • How many received each grade (1 through 10)
  • The total "population" at PSA 10 (the top grade)

Why Does the Pop Report Matter?

Scarcity drives value. A card with only 12 PSA 10 copies in existence is worth significantly more than the same card with 4,000 PSA 10s — even if the raw card is identical. Pop reports give you a verifiable scarcity number to anchor pricing decisions.

How to Use Pop Reports When Buying

Low pop = premium pricing is justified. If a card has fewer than 50 PSA 10s, expect to pay a meaningful premium over the average sold price. These copies are genuinely rare and command collector premiums.

High pop = buyer's market. A card with 5,000+ PSA 10s is unlikely to appreciate significantly unless demand spikes dramatically. These are safer buys at lower prices but have a lower ceiling.

Watch for population growth. When new submissions arrive in bulk (often after a reprint or re-release), a previously low-pop card can suddenly have 10x more PSA 10s, which suppresses value. Keep an eye on pop count trends over time.

PSA 10 vs. PSA 9: Does the Gap Matter?

Always check the PSA 9 pop alongside the PSA 10. If there are 50 PSA 10s but 2,000 PSA 9s, the card is clearly difficult to grade at gem mint — which supports the PSA 10 premium. If both grades have similar populations, the gap between a 9 and 10 may be narrower than the price difference suggests.
